New ApprenticeshipNH Program with Senior Helpers

Senior Helpers Apprenticeship Program Will Train Apprentices as Home Health Aides

Senior Helpers, a provider of in-home senior care located in Stratham, NH, has launched the Senior Helpers apprenticeship program in partnership with Great Bay Community College.

“The new Senior Helpers program is another step toward providing individuals on the seacoast with the opportunity to pursue additional career tracks in the healthcare sector,” said Emily Melhorn Zeien, grant manager for ApprenticeshipNH. “The individuals who complete their Senior Helpers apprenticeship will receive the training necessary to become Home Health Aides, and will leave the program ready to enter the workforce. This apprenticeship opportunity works to address New Hampshire’s workforce challenges by providing individuals with the option to gain marketable skills and pursue alternative career tracks that may not have been available to them otherwise.”

The new Registered Apprenticeship program at Senior Helpers puts apprentices in training to become Home Health Aides. As Home Health Aides, apprentices will work to provide professional caregiving services and help clients maintain their independence, as well as to assist them with the activities of daily living and household and family support services. These services include light housekeeping, running errands, meal planning, laundry and medication reminders. Apprentices must also complete required documentation and reporting, as well as participate in recurring 30-day skills assessments and client reviews.

The Senior Helpers Registered Apprenticeship is a 1-year program. In addition to on-the-job training, apprentices will also participate in and complete 144 hours of classroom instruction at Great Bay Community College. The starting wage for apprentices is $12.00/hour with progressively increasing wages. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the wage will be $13.00/hour with the opportunity to receive higher hourly wages during “high demand” shifts. Classes for the program begin on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Both part-time and full-time work may be available.

ApprenticeshipNH is currently accepting interested apprentices for the Senior Helpers program. To apply to this apprenticeship program, fill out the online application, or contact Joan Glines at jglines@ccsnh.edu.
